mission
Rare’s mission is to conserve threatened species and ecosystems around the world by inspiring people to care about nature and by enabling them to protect it. Rare achieves this mission by training and mentoring local environmental leaders in areas of high biodiversity; by creating and sharing tools that help them build enduring constituencies for conservation; and by forming alliances that enhance their long-term conservation strategies.

growth
  • Grew annual revenues from $2 million in 2002 to more than $6 million in 2006, while also increasing the annual number of Pride conservation campaigns from 3 to 22 in the same period.
  • Added several high-profile partners in the last 2 years including The Nature Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Society, National Audubon Society, and Mexico’s National Commission of Protected Areas.

impact
  • Campaigns for the St. Lucia Parrot, Grenada Dove, and Philippine Cockatoo generated local support and momentum critical to creating species conservation measures in those countries. Campaigns in Mexico’s Sierra de Manantlán and El Triunfo Biosphere Reserves led to a 50% reduction of forest fires caused by “slash and burn” agricultural techniques, the disposal of 16 tons of garbage, and the establishment of a regional recycling program.
  • Campaigns have facilitated the creation of new reserves in Indonesia, Costa Rica, Grenada, Dominica, Saint Vincent, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands, and the passage of new or enhanced natural resource management legislation in Saint Vincent, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, Kosrae, Palau, and Costa Rica.

looking ahead
Rare plans to expand the annual number of Pride campaigns from more than 20 per year in 2006 to 72 per year in 2011. Simultaneously, Rare will position its programs for adoption on 6 continents and in the majority of the world’s principal languages, expanding its university training centers from current sites in England, Mexico, and Indonesia to include sites in China, Brazil, Australia, and French-speaking Africa. Rare will also develop new partnerships and tools to extend the impact of Pride campaigns and create a global alumni network to increase support for local conservationists worldwide.
