Kids Voting USA is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that is working to secure the future of democracy by preparing young people to be educated, engaged voters. Kids Voting USA teaches students about citizenship, civic responsibility, democracy, and the importance of political participation by combining innovative classroom activities with an authentic voting experience to help students gain critical knowledge, skills, and confidence.
Since 2003, New Profit has partnered with the National Venture Fund of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support Kids Voting USA, a longstanding Knight grantee. The joint venture seeks to strengthen the Kids Voting USA network of community-based affiliates, increase the consistency of affiliate social impact, facilitate expansion to critical new markets, and grow new capacities to create civic education policy change. The Kids Voting joint venture is separate from New Profit's core portfolio fund.
During 2005, Kids Voting affiliates reached an estimated 4 million children in classrooms at 10,600 schools in 28 states. During the past six months, Kids Voting USA completed a growth strategy project led by New Profit and Monitor Group. The growth strategy includes building out a high-impact program model appropriate to driving results in major markets and a plan to grow the organization to 1-2 major metropolitan areas per year over the next 5 years. Early plans for full launch in Washington, DC and growth to Chicago are underway.
Kids Voting USA will continue to strengthen affiliates in preparation for the 2006-08 federal elections while also increasing its organizational, technological, and financial capacity to serve students in major metropolitan areas across the U.S. Priorities for the 2006-07 period include raising capital from a variety of growth partners, completing the transition to a high-performing Board of Directors, and validating in 2 major markets a significantly more strategic approach to achieving growth and social impact.
