Teach For America

mission
The mission of Computers for Youth (CFY) is to close the learning gap between urban low-income children and their more affluent peers by improving their learning environment at home. By serving sixth graders, their families, and their teachers, CFY supports parents as learning partners, opens educational opportunities, and connects classroom learning with the home.

growth
  • Grew annual revenue from $1.8 million in 2004 to $2.5 million in 2005 (an increase of 39%) including a sizeable commitment from the New York City Council. CFY also successfully launched a fee-for-service program, with 11 out of 14 CFY schools electing to pay $2,000 per Saturday training session.
  • Distributed 1,510 computers and trained 3,245 individuals (students, parents, and teachers) in computer and internet usage.

impact
  • 84% of students who received a CFY home computer reported that having a home computer helped them perform better in school.
  • More than 80% of parents who participated in CFY Tech Nights reported that the event enabled them to better help their children with homework.

looking ahead
CFY will launch in Philadelphia in June 2006 and strengthen its relationships with key leaders in the software/technology industry. CFY's first annual event in April 2006 will include award presentations to Jon Miller, AOL's CEO and Chairman, and Fran Dramis, Bell South's CIO & eCommerce Officer, as well as an award for the Family Learning Software of the Year.
