BELL

mission
BELL's mission is to dramatically increase the academic achievements, self-esteem, and life opportunities of children living in low-income, urban communities who are performing below grade level. BELL provides rigorous academic and social enrichment in after school and summer programs to elementary school children in Boston, New York City, and Baltimore.

growth
  • Increased revenue by 122% during FY2005 over the previous year, while growing the number of scholars served by more than 220% to a total of 4,415 children, including growth of the summer program from 400 scholars in 3 sites to 1,000 scholars in 5 sites.
  • Became a major provider of after school tutoring in New York City by tapping into funding created by the No Child Left Behind Act, nearly doubling the number of children BELL serves across all sites.

impact
  • During a year of tremendous organizational growth, BELL's program quality remained strong, with 81% of scholars achieving proficiency in core academic skills, compared to 30% of their peers, for the 4th consecutive year. Summer program scholars gained, on average, 6 months grade equivalent skills in reading, writing, and math while most children in urban settings lose 3 months during the summer.
  • BELL worked with Senators Barack Obama (IL) and Barbara Mikulski (MD) to develop new legislation to increase educational opportunities for all children. BELL Summer program is noted in the legislation as a model summer program.

looking ahead
In the coming year, BELL will enhance its systems and infrastructure by building its board, implementing critical IT systems, and developing an alumni program to support graduating scholars in accessing the best middle schools. BELL will grow its summer program, expanding from 600 to 1,000 scholars in Boston and also launch the program in Baltimore.
