Kelly Cognac
Executive Assistant
As an Executive Assistant, Kelly supports Doug Borchard, Rod McCowan, and Will Reynolds. She also assists the Communications team with research, analysis, and content development projects. A life-long social science buff, Kelly is fascinated by the exchange between individuals, cultures, and societies, and how contemporary issues shape the context of our lives. She is inspired by the engagement and unification of people through holistic approaches that empower them to grow, develop, and realize something of value in themselves and their communities. Kelly is happiest when connecting with the people around her through a meaningful conversation, a hug, or simply a smile.
After graduating with a dual degree in history and political science, Kelly worked at a civil litigation firm in Boston where she honed her intellectual and analytical skills. A burgeoning interest in grassroots organizing, coalition building, research, policy development, and lobbying sparked a desire to invest her energy in the social sector. Kelly found a home at New Profit where every day she and her colleagues contribute to the synergy of nonprofit service organizations, public policy, and community development.
Kelly, and her sister Kimberly, spent their childhood climbing trees and scraping knees in the foothills of Central California's Santa Cruz Mountains. Having mastered at a young age the skill of performing everyday tasks with her nose in a book, her parents, Karen and Ralph, encouraged her to come out of her shell through music, sports, and volunteerism. These vital experiences provided her with a rooted sense of self, a place in her community, and a passion for social justice.
Q&A What is your favorite sport to play or watch?I found my niche on the volleyball court, and was fortunate enough to play for Northeastern University with an incredible group of young women, and my dearest friends. What do you like to do on the weekends? I love taking long drives and hikes through the incomparable landscape of New England. Most weekends I can be found riding my bike along the Charles, attending lectures and film screenings in Harvard Square, or singing and dancing my heart out in Central Square. What three things are on your bucket list? Becoming fluent in Spanish. Taking a year to do volunteer service on organic farms around the world. An encore career as a holistic health practitioner.
